Beaches

The Soup Bowl
The nearest beach, 10 minutes on the bus or a 45 minute walk downhill all the way (you will want to take the bus back!)
A beautiful unspoilt stretch of sand with amazing rocks and natural tidal pools for basking in. Famous for surfing, great for sandcastles and relaxing, but not recommended for swimming. The old coast path runs along here, too, if you feel like a walk North or South.
There are toilet and changing facilities and a couple of bars, and the Round House Inn is nearby for a light lunch or drink on the terrace overlooking the beach.

North of Cattlewash
A walker’s paradise, miles of empty beach backed by green hills. This is where Tony Blair comes to really get away from it all!
The Cove set on the hillside at the Southern End is open for lunch, but apart from that and a few beach houses, you’re on your own.

Bath
A short drive South down the East coast, this is where you’ll find safe swimming spots, pretty little coves with white sand, lots of shade, lifeguard facilities and a café.

West coast beaches
The whole of the Caribbean West coast from Speightstown to Holetown and beyond is virtually one long beach with palm-fringed white sand bays. Access to most of them is via lanes off the main coast road. And remember, there are no private beaches on Barbados.

This is where you’ll find the sun loungers, banana boats, snorkelling trips, catamaran cruises, big hotels, glitzy bars and picture postcard Caribbean sunsets.

This is also where you'll find excellent snorkelling and the chance to swim in the open sea with turtles. Folkestone Marine Park is just one of the starting points for the many boat trips that take you along the coast to the good snorkelling spots, with refreshments provided.

South coast beaches
To the East of Bridgetown there are plenty of beaches to choose from, some quite close to the main coast road but others more tucked away. Crane Beach is a spectacular spot on the South Eastern coast, with an immaculate sweep of white sand overlooked by the Crane Beach Hotel. The very pleasant terrace is open to the public and accessible from the beach, and you can relax here with a drink or have lunch. More wave jumping than swimming, as it’s still the Atlantic side of the island, but fun!

Andromeda Gardens
On the road to Bathsheba. A wonderful collection of tropical plant specimens from all over the world, with a charming café and gift shop. A green oasis of shade and a very pleasant spot to while away a few hours.

Barbados Wildlife Reserve
Near Farley Hill in the centre of the island. A chance to see many tropical species, some endangered, in a natural, uncaged environment. If you haven’t spotted the island’s green monkeys anywhere else, you will almost certainly see them here.

Graeme Hall Nature Sanctuary
On the South Coast, near Worthing. An award-winning nature reserve created from a natural mangrove swamp, with seasonal visitors and indigenous wading birds including 3 types of egrets.

There are also aviaries with exotic parrots, waders, ducks, flamingos and ibis. Well-stocked (air-conditioned!) gift shop and refreshments available.

Plantation houses
St Nicholas Abbey is just one of the original plantation houses open to the public, and is the oldest on the island dating back to the 1650s. A visit here gives you a fascinating insight into life on a sugar plantation over the centuries.

Morgan Lewis Sugar Mill
There were once over 500 windmills on the island, used to extract the juice from the sugar cane. This is the only one to have survived intact, and still in working order.

The Mount Gay Rum Factory
Just North of Bridgetown. You can see how rum is made and learn about its history, with a complimentary cocktail to finish off the tour.

Hiking
You can walk on your own, or join a Barbados National Trust organised hikes, organised regularly and open to all.

Golf
There are 6 excellent courses on the island, including 2 public courses  with green fees at around B$150.

Diving and snorkelling

The seas around Barbados provide some great opportunities for diving.

Surfing
The world famous surfing spot the Soup Bowl is just down the hill from Goa IDC Country House and is home to surfing championships. Surfboard hire and lessons are available locally.
